Term 2 – week 6

• Welcome new student
• Staff update
• Response to Critical Incident
• A call for old sandpit toys
• Teddy Bear Hospital
• Volunteers
• House Athletics

We would like to welcome Connor Bourke and his family who have recently joined our school community.

Grade 1W parents would have received a letter from me early in the week, informing them that Kathy Watt will remain on sick leave for the remainder of the term.

Bus travellers were reminded in assembly that once they get of the school bus in the mornings, they are to come directly into the school.

After a rigorous discussion at School Council, the school has decided to action on a number of things in response to our recent incident. Firstly, seven security cameras will be placed in strategic points around the school to allow the monitoring of movement into and out of our school. Secondly, I am currently negotiating with the Department of Education, seeking a grant to allow us to make some improvements to our boundary fencing and gates. Thirdly, we are looking at a Global SMS system, so that we can communicate directly with parents via SMS. I have also actioned on the construction of a giant sandpit, in response to moving children away from our boundary fence line on Vincent Street. This is all on top of our daily practices which have as you know already been reviewed and strengthened.

We are calling for ‘old sandpit toys’ for our giant sandpit project. Do you have any old sandpit toys at home that you no longer have a use for? Do you have any old kitchen ware e.g. jelly moulds etc. that would be fun to play with in a sandpit.

The Prep and Grade 1 classes had a wonderful time with the activity ‘Teddy Bear Hospital’. Learning all about who works in a hospital and how they can help people.

Thank you to parents who have responded to the call for help. The Book sorting for the Book Fair is processing well. The next Book sorting session is on Sunday 22nd June 10.00. Also thank you in advance to the parents who are volunteering their time this weekend either on Saturday between 10.00 – 12.00 or Sunday between 10.00 – 12.00 assisting with the Mega Garage Sale in our gym.

Finally, congratulations to all the Grade 3-6 students who competed at Llanberris last Friday at the House Athletics Sports. It was a great day. Thank you to all the parents who actively involved themselves by helping with timing, measuring etc. Well done to Sutton and congratulations to Anna Santurini and Finlay Loft on winning the individual medals in the 100m championship. Two teams will now be selected for the Goldfields Athletics event and will train in the lead up to the Spring Carnival. Also Thanks also goes to Mr Kiellerup and Sherilee for their co-ordination of the event.

Education week

What a terrific Education Week. The Preps performance at assembly was great and the senior choir showed us some real class. The grade 3/4 students enjoyed their workshop at the Town Hall with author and illustrator Leigh Hobbs and the Prep, 1 & 2 grades enjoyed the activities around National Simultaneous Story Time. Early Year Parents most certainly would have heard stories about the book ‘Too Many Elephants In This House’ by Ursula Dubosarsky and Andrew Joyner.

I enjoyed working with 2S on ‘Monster Writing’, they are so good with their adverbs and nouns.

Well done to all the Grade 3 & 5 students on completing the NAPLAN tests last week
Well done to the 12 students who represented Goldfields in the Zone XC at Ballarat last Friday. Congratulations to Anna Santurini on placing second and advancing through to Regional Level. Thank you to all the parents who supported on the day.

To finish celebrations around Education Week we are looking forward to the House Athletics this Friday at Llanberris in Ballarat.

Our Open Day was a great success, with tours of the school. Our School Captains did the school proud in the way they showcased our school.

We are now calling for 2015 enrolments of Prep students. If you have a pre-school child and are intending for your child to attend this school, please drop in and pick up an enrolment form or download one from our website. Alternately, ring Leonie or Marilyn and we will put one in the post for you.

We have announced that the plaque honouring Ivor Bowen has been set into the rock in front of our Ivor Bowen Memorial Cultural Awards sculpture.

Finally, a reminder that you can support the school by volunteering some time this weekend on Sunday 25th at 10.00 to assist the Book Fair Committee with book sorting or you can assist with the Mega Garage Sale on Saturday 31st May or Sunday 1st June.
