Welcome to Curtis O’Brien and his family. Curtis is in 1W and is settling in well.
Last week as a part of Education Week, two of our staff were recognised for their outstanding contribution to education by the Department of Education. Karen McHugh was presented a recognition certificate for 35 years of service at a ceremony in Ballarat and Kathy Watt was presented her recognition certificate for 45 years of service at a ceremony in Melbourne. Congratulations to both Karen and Kathy on their wonderful contribution to education over so many years.
Our Grade 5/6 students attended the Daylesford Secondary College Transition Day last Friday. I received very good reports about our student’s behaviour and willingness to participate fully in the day.
I would like to thank Samantha Doidge for her volunteer work surrounding the Monster Book Fair, which was a part of our Education Week celebrations. Sam did a terrific job in setting up the Monster Book sales in our OLC for over a week. A significant number of books were sold, over $2000 and Scholastic Books then pass back to the school 30% of the profit to the school for library book purchases, which is over $700 worth of books. Thanks also to the parents who made a voluntary donation to the Book Fair, Jen Bray, Shelley Sandow, Sam Doidge and Denis Toner.
Wednesday was a pupil free day, thank you to our parents/carers for supporting the school in this way. The day was very valuable for all staff, who were involved in a number of activities. Staff took part in the first step of the school review process. Every four years the school is required to complete a school review. This enables the school an opportunity to reflect on our school data, practices and priorities. Parents and School Council will be included in this process later in the year. Staff then completed a workshop on reporting. Parents will notice some changes to your child’s report this semester. The first thing you will notice is that we have separated Literacy and Numeracy from all the other domains of learning and made separate comments about both areas. We believe this format reinforces where the majority of time is spent in our teaching and will be easier for parents to distinguish their child’s progress. We welcome feedback about our new format, which can be given via our website or the parent feedback sheet included in the report.
On Tuesday this week we practiced our Emergency Evacuation Drill to the school oval. The children were well briefed and the drill went very well. This was an excellent opportunity to reinforce to the children where our assembly point is on the oval if and when we need to evacuate the school buildings.
This week in assembly 1J presented a power point and a short performance about Empathy. Empathy is not an easy area to explain but 1J did a terrific job. Can I refer all parents back to last week’s newsletter to 1J explanation about Empathy. Thank you 1J, well done.

Last Friday sixteen children travelled to Victoria Park in Ballarat to compete in the Divisional Cross Country. Many families were able to assist and support on the day. All the children gave their best and performed very admirably. I am very proud of all them. Ten students qualified and progressed through to the Greater SW Region XC to be held in Warrnambool on Monday 6th June. All three girls in the 10 year old qualified; Jessica Santurini 4th, Charlotte Streat 1st and Erin Child 9th.
In the U10 Boys, Zack Koleski placed 7th, and James Child placed 2nd along with Tyson Scoble who placed 4th in the 11year old boys. In the 11year old girls, Perri Eaton placed 7th and Ruby Hunt placed 10th. Sebastian Streat won his event the 2km Disability Boys. The final student to place in the top 12 and therefore qualify for the next level was MacKenzie Downing, who placed 8th. Congratulations to all these students and good luck in Warrnambool.
After a very sucessful Open Day, whereby we meet many pre-school parents, the tour of the school allowed us to showcase some of the excellent work that we are achieving across the school.
We are now calling for 2017 Prep enrolments. Enrolment forms are available at the front office or you can download one from our website. Current parents who have a child going into Prep, if you could action on the enrolment of your next child asap, this would be greatly appreciated.
As part of ‘May is National Family Reading Month’ the school offered a Monster Book Fair selling an excellent range of Scholastic Books. Thank you to families who supported the fundraiser and thank you to Samantha Doidge for all her work throughout the week.
Accompanying this newsletter is a letter to parents outlining and opportunity for parents to develop their skills and enhance their career opportunities. Finally, a reminder that next Wednesday is a Pupil Free Day. Staff will be involved in the school review process and in reporting writing.

Eighteen students qualified for the Divisional Cross Country Championships last week at the Goldfields XC event by placing in the top six for their age group. This Friday they travel to Ballarat to run at Victoria Park. We would like to wish the students all the very best and will have a full report for you next week.
Our Grade 3 & 5 students sat the NAPLAN tests this week. Four different tests were conducted, Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy. Overall the students were very calm, applied themselves and did their best which is very pleasing. Parents will receive individual reports on their child’s performances and the school will receive the student’s data in a number of formats. The staff do not depend on this data to inform their teaching & learning as they already have been tracking the progress of all their students. However it does provide a measure for the school of some of our whole school practices in Literacy and Numeracy such as our current focus on writing. A 2016 information brochure for parents was sent home this week, if any parents wish to discuss NAPLAN any further then please don’t hesitate to call me.
Our Family Groups continue to provide opportunities for students across the school to develop positive relationships. This was reinforced to me again this Monday. I was able to observe how seriously our senior students are when they take on the responsibility of picking up their buddy from the Prep room. They have clearly developed strong and positive relationships.
Just a reminder that our Open Morning next Tuesday at 9.00 – 11.00 is for any parents with Pre-School children, who are looking at options for 2017, to take a tour of the school after attending assembly.
A number of Grade 3 & 4 parents would have received a letter from the school last week concerning outstanding payments in student requisites and in kitchen garden. As I have stated previously the school is not in a position to carry this debt and we ask that parents please action on this matter immediately. The kitchen garden program needs the support of parents if it is to be provided above and beyond our normal programs. We will be forced to put alternative arrangements in place in terms 3 & 4 for any students who have outstanding levies. As always parents should contact our Business Manager Deborah Cowen to discuss a payment plan if they are experiencing difficulty.

After a busy few weeks in Athletics, we announced at assembly this week that Tipperary won the House Athletics Shield. This was very exciting for Tipperary who has taken out the House Swimming, House XC and now the House Aths. This is the first time one house has won all three events.
A number of ribbons were also presented to winners of the HJ events which were conducted at school. We also acknowledged the excellent efforts by our Goldfields Athletics team who got within a few points of St Michaels who won the day on percentage. A record number of our students have qualified for the Divisional Athletics later in the year. Our relay teams were very impressive, with four teams also advancing.

Wednesday this week, 35 students in grade 3-6 represented the school in the Goldfields XC event at Clunes GC. Pictures are now on the website. I was very impressed by this group of children who gave their best, over a very challenging course. They supported each other and demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship by congratulating their fellow competitors. A full report will occur next week.
The highlight of the week for me however, was the number and variety of recognition certificates that were awarded at assembly this week. Recognition certificates were handed out for reading, spelling, organisation, best buddies, kindness to others, quality work in the classroom and kitchen garden to a large number of students. The school values were clearly on display and the staff and children clearly have a wonderful working relationship. I am very proud of how the school is operating at present, we continue to build on our very positive start to the year.
